Taking Off

In the cold night air, a solitary trumpet writes the story of the long days and longer nights that move her slowly past the hard decision she made to end it at last.

Perhaps he’ll try once again to keep their wheel turning. It won’t matter. The demons are behind her now.

He feigns indifference to acquaintances. He laments to friends that he doesn’t understand. He tells himself she’ll be back one day.

But in his heart, he knows why the end was inevitable.

The beat dies. The echoes fade. Another day. A new tune.
